Former Australian Cricket Test captain Steve Waugh and wife Lynette are putting their Alfords Point home on the market for the first time in almost 30 years with Ray White Menai selling agent Matt Debreczeni.
The couple drew inspiration from the 1800s federation style homes during the building process, but with a modern twist. Some of the standout features include cedar stained glass windows, a unique roofline and detailed brickwork, “building the house was something we did together as a family,” Steve said.
“It was almost like a hand-made house over the years, so a lot of care and attention was paid.”
According to Steve, one of the home’s best features is the sense of peace and the feeling of being so close to nature, “it was an ideal location growing up for me as a sporting person and as a family to develop.”
“There are kookaburras and birds who are regulars around the area and there is a lot of natural wildlife, and walking trails down the back of the house which were ideal for fitness work.”
Selling agent Matt Debreczeni is impressed by this one-of-a-kind property, “It is one of the most unique homes I have ever had the opportunity to market, it would make for a stunning family residence, it is a very private property,” he said.
The Waughs built the five bedroom and three bathroom house for privacy, as a retreat, but Steve said the Alfords Point community and their neighbours over the years have been fantastic, providing a good mix of community and privacy.
“We’ve had really fantastic neighbours over the years and it’s a very together community, it’s a place for me that was close enough to the airport, yet far enough away from the congestion of Sydney,” he said.
To Steve and his wife, the house would be ideally suited to a family with kids who enjoy an outdoor lifestyle.
“For young kids growing up I think it’s a fantastic area, there’s plenty of good schools around as well. There’s a lot of play areas for kids, like secret hideaways, so it’s a house for kids, there’s always a new space to go to and somewhere to play,” he said
Matt added that It is a property that will attract a lot of strong interest both from the local community as well as an out of town buyer.
The Waughs now have their sights set on a more coastal base, as their children grow into teenagers and gravitate toward an entertainment focused lifestyle.
“Our kids want to spend their time near the beach and we want to be close to where they are,” said Steve.
But, he will miss the serenity, bushland and the birdlife Alfords Point has to offer, “All our memories are there because that’s the only place we have known over the last couple of decades.”
“It just feels like a very peaceful home that is safe and secure and that’s the thing that will strike people firstly – it’s a unique looking house and it’s not over the top and it will really grow on people once they see it and once they move in.”
